Tools

WpdMon (ToolsWpdMon)

WpdMon replaces MtpMon for computers that run Windows Vista or Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. More information about WpdMon can be found in the Readme.txt located in the WpdMon directory. Updated versions of WpdMon can be found in the Windows Driver Kit for Windows Vista.

DirectMTP (ToolsDirectMTP)

This tool is an update to the existing DirectMTP for Windows Media Player 10. You must use the specific version depending upon your operating system and your Windows Media Player version. Please see the Readme in that folder.

Additional Information

MTP/IP

Media Transfer Protocol over Internet Protocol (MTP/IP) is fully implemented in Windows Vista. The transport layer is specified by PTP/IP specification. Connectivity to Windows is established using the documents mentioned above.

Update to the Windows Media Player Extension:

Windows Media Player 11 or later attempts to synchronize the metadata attributes, shown in the following table, from a device during metadata round-tripping. These attributes are synchronized through the WMP_MetadataRountrip (0x9201) operation. This is an update from Windows Media Player 10. More information on this operation can be found here:

Representative Sample Support

Windows Media Player 11 introduces support for transferring representative samples ("thumbnails") of images and videos to devices. A representative sample will consist of a scaled-down image to represent an image or video.

To receive these samples, devices should declare support for the following object properties for the EXIF format if image samples are requested and for the WMV format if video samples are requested in the GetObjectPropDesc:

RepresentativeSampleWidth - Set to GET/SET, with a none-zero value

RepresentativeSampleHeight - Set to GET/SET, with a none-zero value

RepresentativeSampleData - Set to GET/SET

RepresentativeSampleFormat - Set to GET/SET, Supported formats must include EXIF

The RepresentativeSampleWidth and RepresentativeSampleHeight will be used to determine what size the device prefers the representative data image.

Windows Media Player 11 will send a JPG using the RepresentativeSampleData property.

For interdependent format properties, only the first interdependent property for each of EXIF and WMV formats will be queried for the above properties.

Please refer to the MTP Specification for details on each of the object properties.
