TYPES OF POLLUTION specifIC to ROADS
Depending on their intensity and duration, there are several types of pollution characteristic for roads and road traffic:
v Pollution manifested during the works of construction of the motorway. This type of pollution has a temporary character reaching high values in peak periods when the Production bases function at full capacity. In this category of the sources of pollution characteristic for the period of execution are included:
linear sources because of the daily traffic from the Production Bases to the working fronts,
surface sources because of the functioning of the equipment in the area of the working fronts,
punctiform sources represented by the functioning of the Production Bases, respectively of the asphalt and concrete stations.
v Chronicle pollution manifested during the operational period of the motorway as a result of daily road traffic. This type of pollution has a chronicle character and the pollution level in this operational period of the motorway can reach different intensities, depending on the volume and the type of traffic;
v Accidental pollution, as a result of traffic accidents of vehicles transporting liquid hydrocarbons or other toxic or corrosive materials are involved. By their rapid dispersion in the environment these substances can damage aquifer layers, can change the quality of the lakes, ponds and even of the running waters;
v Seasonal pollution, as a result of the works executed for the maintenance of the traffic within safety conditions during winter, on roads covered with ice and glaze.
