PRESENT TENSE SIMPLE

Expresses: - a usual, repeated action

- a permanent state



Time adverbs: - usually, always, often, ever, never,

- in the morning / afternoon / evening,

- at noon, at night,

- in summer / autumn / winter / spring,

- on Sundays / Mondays / Tuesdays, etc.,

- every day / week / month / year,

- once / twice a day / week / month / year

It is formed as follows :

Affirmative I

We + verb (1st form)

You

They

e.g. I go to school in the morning.

You play football on Saturdays.

They wash their car every week.

He

She + verb + (e)s

It

e.g. She goes to school in the morning.

He plays football on Saturdays.

It (the dog) eats its bone

Negative: I

We + do not + verb (1st form)

You  (don't)

e.g. I don't go to school in the morning.

You don't play football on Saturdays.

They don't wash their car every week.

He

She + does not + verb

It (doesn't)

e.g. She doesn't go to school in the morning.

He doesn't play football on Saturdays.

Interogative (questions)

(Wh- word) + Do(es) + SB + verb?

e.g. - Do you play football on Sundays?  - When do you play football?

- Yes, we do. - We play football on Sundays.

- No, we don't. - We don't play football on Mondays.

- Does he play football on Sundays? - When does he play football?

- Yes, he does. - He plays football on Sundays.

- No, he doesn't. - He doesn't play football on Mondays.

PRESENT TENSE CONTINUOUS

Expresses: an action that is taking place at this moment and is seen in its development, or a temporary state.

Time adverbs: - now; at this moment

It is formed as follows:

Affirmative

SB + BE (present) + verb -ing

e.g I am playing football now.

He is playing football now.

You are playing football now.

They are playing football now.

Negative:

SB + BE (present) + not + verb -ing

e.g I am not playing football now.

He is not playing football now.

You are not playing football now.

They are not playing football now.

Interogative (question)

(Wh- word) + BE (present) + SB + verb -ing?

e.g - Are you playing football now?

- Yes, I am.

- No, I am not.

- Is he playing football now?

- Yes, he is.

- No, he is not.

- Are they playing football now?

- Yes, they are.

- No, they aren't.

PAST TENSE SIMPLE

Expresses: a past finishe action, saying when it happened or when it was over.

Time adverbs : - yesterday,

a week / a month / a year ago,

- last week / month / year / summer

- once upon a time

In English verbs are of 2 kinds : regular and irregular

a) Regular verbs - get the ed ending for The Past ( the 2nd form) and the Past Participle ( the 3rd form)

e.g.: wash - washed - washed

cook - cooked - cooked

work - worked - worked

b) Irregular verbs change the root of the verb for the Past ( the 2nd form) and the Past Participle ( the 3rd form)

e.g.: be - was, were - been

have - had - had

go - went - gone

write - wrote - written

Past tense is formed as follows:

AFFIRMATIVE: SB + VERB (forma a II-a)

e.g. He went home at three o'clock yesterday.

We washed the car last week.

NEGATIV: SB + DID + NOT + VERB (forma I)

(didn't)

e.g.: He didn't go home at three o'clock yesterday.

We didn't wash the car last week.

INTEROGATIV:  (Wh-word) + DID + SB + VERB (forma I) ?

e.g.: Did he go home at three o'clock yesterday?

- Yes, he did.

- No, he didn't.

- When did he go home yesterday?

- He went home at three o'clock yesterday.

- Did we wash the car last week?

- Yes, we did.

- No, we didn't.

- When did we wash the car?

- We washed the car last week.

PAST TENSE CONTINUOUS

Expresses an action seen in its development at a certain moment in the past

Time adverbs: - at this time yesterday / last week,

- while, as, when

It is formed :

Affirmative

SB + BE (trecut) + verb -ing

e.g I was playing football at this time yesterday.

He was playing football at this time last Monday.

You were playing football when I saw you.

They were playing football as she was watching them.

Negative:

SB + BE (trecut) + not + verb -ing

e.g I was not playing football at this time yesterday.

He was not playing football at this time last Monday.

You were not playing football when I saw you.

They were not playing football as she was watching them.

Interogative

(Wh- word) + BE (trecut) + SB + verb -ing?

e.g - Were you playing football when she saw you?

- Yes, I was.

- No, I was not.

- Was he playing football when she saw him?

- Yes, he was.

- No, he was not.

- Were they playing football when father came home?

- Yes, they were.

- No, they weren't.

- What were they doing when father came home?

- They were playing football.
